Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Orange County Owner’s Guide
A DuraFlex chimney cap installation in Orange County typically runs between $375 and $650 installed, depending on the cap model, roof access, and whether the existing mounting collar needs replacement. We stock DuraFlex-compatible caps on our trucks and can usually complete the swap the same day we diagnose it. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: a rainy February morning reveals water streaking down the firebox wall, or a spring gust leaves aluminum shavings on the patio. Sometimes it’s just the sound – that thin metallic rattle when the Santa Ana winds kick up through Irvine or Yorba Linda, telling you the cap is loose or the mesh has torn away.
Danny Cortes has pulled more failed caps off Orange County chimneys than he can count, and the pattern is consistent: coastal homes in Huntington Beach and Newport Beach corrode faster from salt air, while inland homes in Anaheim and Fullerton lose mesh and lids to wind and dry heat. Either way, the fix is straightforward when you match the cap to the flue correctly.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex is a flexible chimney liner system, and its caps are designed to lock onto the liner’s termination point at the top of the chimney, not to the masonry crown itself. That’s the first compatibility gotcha: a DuraFlex cap mounts to the flex liner’s top plate or coupler. If your liner was installed without a proper termination plate, a generic masonry cap won’t work, and neither will a DuraFlex cap until the termination is corrected.
The two families you’ll encounter are the standard round caps for 4-inch through 8-inch liner diameters, and the larger multiflue caps used when the DuraFlex liner runs inside an existing clay tile stack. The round caps use a slip-on or clamp connection, while multiflue setups typically need a top plate with a mounting ring. The size you need is the liner’s inside diameter, printed on the liner’s original label. If that label is gone, we measure the flue opening rather than guess. We’re not affiliated with DuraFlex – we’re an independent Orange County service company that installs their components because the materials hold up here. For caps, we recommend genuine DuraFlex or a quality stainless aftermarket equivalent made by a domestic fabricator; we do not install painted steel caps, because they don’t survive two coastal seasons.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. The cap’s lid or sidewall has rusted through, or the mounting collar has separated from the liner. This is the most common failure we see on caps older than six or seven years in Orange County’s damp winters.
- Aluminum or stainless shavings on the roof or near the downspout. Wind-driven vibration is grinding the cap against the liner or chase top. The cap is loosening, and what you’re seeing is metal fatigue, not normal wear.
- Birds or bees inside the flue. The mesh screen has torn or pulled away from the cap frame. A missing screen also signals that the cap’s spark protection is gone, which matters in our dry summer months.
- A rattle when the wind blows. The clamp or mounting screws have backed off. Left alone, the cap can shift enough to open a gap that lets rain run straight down the liner’s outside wall.
- Rust streaks on the chimney chase or crown. The cap’s materials are wicking corrosion, and the runoff is staining everything beneath it. In coastal neighborhoods, this can happen in as little as three to five years with lower-grade steel.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For most Orange County homes, an installed DuraFlex-compatible cap runs from $375 on the low end for a standard round stainless cap with easy roof access, to around $650 when the job involves a multiflue top plate, custom collar fabrication, or steep roof work on a two-story Mission Viejo or Coto de Caza home. The price you get from us is the price you pay: we write it down before any work begins, and it includes the cap, the mounting hardware, removal and disposal of the old cap, and a photo report of the finished installation.
Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every cap installation. If anything shifts, loosens, or leaks within a year, we come back and make it right without a second invoice. That promise applies to the workmanship, and the cap manufacturer’s warranty applies to the material, which we explain in plain terms before you sign.
DIY or Call Us?
If you can get on the roof safely and you want to see the cap’s condition for yourself, we encourage it. A visual check of the mesh and lid is straightforward. What we don’t recommend is replacing the cap without checking what’s happening at the liner’s termination point. The cap is only as good as the connection beneath it, and that’s where a bad install causes true damage.
Roof work is inherently risky, especially on Orange County’s tile roofs, which are slippery and easily cracked underfoot. Our background-checked technicians arrive with roof ladders, harnesses, and shoe covers, and shoe covers are only the start. Drop cloths go down before we step inside, and a photo of the clean-up is taken before we leave. If you’d rather not climb a ladder at all, call (831) 217-7981 and we’ll handle the roof work while you stay on the ground.
FAQs
A stainless DuraFlex-compatible cap installed in Orange County typically lasts 10 to 15 years, with coastal homes in Huntington Beach and Corona del Mar seeing the shorter end of that range due to salt corrosion. Interior neighborhoods in Orange and Tustin usually get the longer lifespan. The cap’s mesh screen is usually the first component to fail, often within 7 to 10 years, even when the lid is still solid. Call (831) 217-7981 for an exact assessment of your existing cap.
Small tears in the mesh and loose clamps can sometimes be repaired, but if the cap’s frame is corroded or the mounting collar has separated, replacement is the safer fix. We’ll show you the damage in a photo before recommending anything, so you know exactly what you’re paying for. A repair on a failing cap usually buys you a season, not a decade. Call (831) 217-7981 for an honest read on whether yours can be salvaged.
Most cap installations take between 45 and 90 minutes once we’re on the roof, including removal of the old cap, prep of the liner termination, and installation of the new cap. The total visit runs about two hours when you include the indoor inspection and clean-up review. We’ll give you the expected window when you book, and we’ll call before we arrive.
We stock the most common DuraFlex-compatible sizes on our service vehicles, including 4-inch through 8-inch round caps and replacement mesh assemblies. For multiflue applications or unique mounting plates, we may need a short lead time to source the correct part. Call (831) 217-7981 with your liner size, and we’ll tell you over the phone whether we can complete the install same day.
Know what’s in your flue before you light the first fire of the season. If your DuraFlex cap is showing any of the signs above, call (831) 217-7981 for a free estimate. A live person answers 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and our uniformed technicians will arrive with shoe covers, drop cloths, and a written price before any work starts. HeatShield and Gelco components are also on our trucks for repairs outside the cap itself, so we can solve the whole problem in one visit.
