Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Sweep in Orange County: What to Know First
We provide independent Gelco chimney sweep and inspection services across Orange County, with most standard sweeps completed in a single visit. A routine Gelco fireplace cleaning and Level 1 inspection typically runs between $189 and $289, depending on flue height, creosote stage, and whether the unit has a factory cap or an aftermarket one. If you own a Gelco prefabricated fireplace and haven’t had the flue looked at in a year or more, this page tells you exactly what we check, what we’ve found in Orange County homes, and what it costs before we ever ring your doorbell. Call (831) 217-7981 for a written quote, and we’ll tell you the price before any work starts.
How Gelco Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
- Creosote buildup behind the Gelco damper assembly. Gelco prefab fireplaces, especially the older G-Series and early zero-clearance models installed throughout Orange County tract homes from the 1980s and 1990s, have a tight radius where the damper meets the smoke shelf. That corner collects creosote faster than an open masonry throat. Left alone, it restricts draft and sends smoke back into the room on cold starts. Our fix: we pull the damper plate when the design allows, hand-scrape the shelf, and show you a camera photo of the cleaned cavity before we reassemble.
- Factory Gelco refractory panels cracking at the side seams. Gelco fireplaces use angled refractory panels that meet at the side walls. Orange County’s coastal humidity plus the heat-and-cool cycle wears the seams first. Hairline cracks are normal and safe; gaps wider than a quarter mean the panel has shifted and should be replaced before embers reach the metal shell. We carry measured replacements that match Gelco’s original panel dimensions, and we’ll tell you honestly if the crack is cosmetic or structural after we see it on camera.
- Warped Gelco grate bars from burning manufactured logs. Many Orange County homeowners burn those store-bought 2-hour manufactured logs. They burn hotter than cordwood at the grate line and the thin steel bars on older Gelco units can warp. A warped grate sits uneven, which pushes logs toward the glass or refractory. During a sweep, we check the grate level, and if it’s bowed, we show you the gap with a straightedge. It’s a $60 to $90 part replacement, not a reason for a new insert.
- Aftermarket caps that don’t fit Gelco’s flue outlet. Gelco flue collars have a specific O.D. that doesn’t always match universal slip-in caps sold at big-box stores. We’ve pulled off caps in Mission Viejo and Anaheim Hills homes that were held on with one screw and a strip of foil tape because the previous installer grabbed the wrong size. We source listed caps sized to the actual Gelco model, which prevents rain entry and keeps sparks where they belong.
- Soot staining on Gelco glass doors that won’t clean off with standard glass cleaner. The ceramic glass on Gelco doors gets a baked-on carbon haze from low-temperature fires with unseasoned wood. We use a non-caustic glass cleaner specific to ceramic fireplace glass, applied after the sweep, and we show you how to avoid the buildup in the first place: shorter, hotter fires with dry wood.

Our Gelco Chimney Sweep Process
Every Gelco job follows the same sequence, so nothing is skipped and you know the bill before we start. It looks like this:
- 1
Call and schedule. A live person answers (831) 217-7981, 24/7. We’ll ask the fireplace make, model if you can find it, and when it was last swept. If you’re not sure, that’s fine. We’ll identify it on site.
- 2
Arrival and floor protection. Our techs arrive in uniform, background-checked, with shoe covers and drop cloths already in hand. Every job includes floor protection from the front door to the hearth, per the Cedarwell Care Promise.
- 3
Visual and camera inspection. We inspect the Gelco firebox, refractory panels, damper, flue liner, and termination cap. A camera goes up the flue on every sweep, and you can watch the screen with us. If we find a crack in the flue, a missing cap, or a refractory panel loosening, we show you the photo.
- 4
Written price before work. All standard sweep work is quoted upfront. If the inspection turns up something extra, like a replacement grate or a cap that needs resizing, we show you the part and the written price before we touch it. No on-the-spot pressure. You decide.
- 5
Sweep and detail. We run rotary brushes sized to your flue, hand-scrape the smoke shelf and damper area, vacuum the firebox with a HEPA-filtered unit, and clean the glass and surrounds. Pet-safe products are chosen where there’s a choice.
- 6
Clean-up photo and guarantee. Before the crew leaves, we take a photo of the cleaned firebox and the protected floor area and show it to you. Every Gelco sweep is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right.

AfterWhat Gelco Chimney Sweep Costs in Orange County
Pricing depends on flue height, access, and what we find inside. Here’s what Orange County homeowners can expect for common Gelco scenarios:
- Standard Gelco sweep with Level 1 inspection: $189 – $289
- Sweep plus camera Level 2 inspection (for real estate transactions or after a chimney fire): $299 – $399
- Replacement Gelco grate: $60 – $90 (part only, installed during a sweep)
- Refractory panel replacement (per panel): $120 – $200 depending on model and panel size
- Resized spark arrestor cap: $80 – $150 installed
What moves the price: flue height (second-story roofs cost more to access safely), creosote stage (glazed, tar-like buildup takes longer), and whether critters or nests need removal. We tell you the number before we start, every single time. Call (831) 217-7981 and we’ll give you a written estimate over the phone or in person, free.
Why Orange County Homeowners Call Kindling Chimney Orange County for Gelco Work
Our crew works on Gelco units regularly, from the older G-Series and zero-clearance boxes to more recent models. We know where the smoke shelf hides creosote, which refractory panels crack first in coastal humidity, and how to source parts that actually fit the flue collar. Danny Cortes, our owner, has been inside hundreds of Orange County chimneys, and he’ll tell you if a repair can wait or if it actually matters before your next fire. When a Gelco needs more than a sweep, we use professional-grade materials from trusted brands like DuraFlex and HeatShield, so the fix outlasts the patch. Every visit includes drop cloths, shoe covers, a written price first, and a photo of the clean-up. That’s the Cedarwell Care Promise, and it’s how we’ve built our name in Orange County since we started here.
FAQs
No. Regular chimney sweeping and inspection is standard maintenance, and it’s exactly what Gelco’s own documentation calls for to keep the unit operating safely. As an independent Gelco service provider, we’re not affiliated with or authorized by Gelco, but we work with parts and methods that respect the original design. We’ll note the sweep and inspection in writing so you have a record of maintenance, which is what a warranty claim, if it ever comes, actually requests.
Every 30 to 50 fires, or once a year, whichever comes first. Orange County homes near the coast see more humidity, which can accelerate creosote hardening in the flue. Homes in inland areas like Yorba Linda or Rancho Santa Margarita tend to burn more frequently in winter, which also builds cresote faster. If you burn manufactured logs, lean toward the 30-fire end. We’ll give you a straightforward answer after the first inspection: some households can safely go two years; most should not.
Yes. We run a camera up the flue on every sweep. If the metal liner inside your Gelco chimney chase is rusted through, warped, or perforated, the camera shows it in real time and we save the photo for you. We don’t recommend liner work without camera evidence you’ve seen with your own eyes. If the liner is sound, we’ll say so and tell you what to watch for next year. If it does need work, our HeatShield resurfacing or DuraFlex liner options come with a written quote before anything is ordered. Call (831) 217-7981 to schedule an inspection.
No. Cloudy or etched Gelco glass is almost always from burning unseasoned wood or manufactured logs at low temperatures, which deposits silica-based haze that bakes into the ceramic surface. Some clouding can be polished out with a ceramic-glass polish during your sweep. If the glass is etched, which looks like a white film that won’t budge with any cleaner, replacement glass is the only real fix. We’ll tell you which one you’ve got after we see it, and we’ll quote the glass replacement honestly, including whether it’s worth doing now or can wait.
We can usually schedule a sweep within 5 to 10 days, depending on where you are in Orange County and the season. October through December is our busiest stretch, so if you want a sweep before the first real fire of the season, call (831) 217-7981 a few weeks early. There’s no extra charge for scheduling ahead, and the written price we give you is the price you’ll pay when we arrive. Know what’s in your flue before you light the first fire of the season.
